Cataracts

What are cataracts?

Cataracts are a common eye condition characterized by the clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which lies behind the iris and the pupil. This clouding occurs when proteins in the lens clump together, causing blurry or hazy vision. Cataracts typically develop slowly over time and are a natural part of the aging process. However, they can also be caused by factors such as injury, certain medications, or medical conditions like diabetes.

Symptoms of cataracts

The symptoms of cataracts can vary depending on the severity of the condition. Some common symptoms include:
  • Blurry or cloudy vision
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Colors appear faded or yellowed
  • Double vision
As cataracts progress, these symptoms may worsen, eventually leading to significant vision impairment if left untreated.

What causes cataracts?

Cataracts are primarily attributed to the natural aging process, with no specific known causes identified. However, certain health issues and lifestyle habits can heighten the risk of developing this condition. For example, diabetes, smoking, eye injuries, excessive alcohol consumption, prolonged sunlight exposure, and certain medications have been linked to an increased susceptibility to cataracts. In certain cases cataracts can be present at birth or developed shortly after birth.

Diagnosis

Diagnosing cataracts typically involves a comprehensive eye examination, which may include a visual acuity test, a slit-lamp examination, and a retinal examination.

How to treat cataracts?

In the early stages, vision correction with glasses or contact lenses may help improve vision temporarily. However, the most common treatment for cataracts is surgery to remove the clouded lens and replace it with an artificial lens. Cataract surgery is a short, routine procedure. It is safe and highly effective, and can significantly improve vision and quality of life.

Potential consequences of untreated cataracts

Failure to address cataracts can lead to progressive vision impairment and, in severe cases, blindness. As the condition advances, everyday tasks like reading, watching television, or driving may become challenging or unmanageable. However, with timely intervention and appropriate treatment, individuals can significantly mitigate the impact of cataracts on their vision and quality of life.

Book your appointment

Regular eye appointments are essential to caring for your vision. If you experience symptoms of cataracts or are noticing changes in your vision, schedule an appointment for a comprehensive eye examination today.
