Comprehensive Eye Examination

Comprehensive eye examinations play a vital role in maintaining optimal eye health and detecting potential issues before they escalate into serious problems. Our eye exams go beyond simply checking visual acuity, by delving into various aspects of ocular health and function so that your vision is the best it can be.

How long is a comprehensive eye exam?

Typically lasting between 45 and 60 minutes, comprehensive eye exams involve a series of tests and assessments performed by optometrists or ophthalmologists. To ensure thoroughness and attention to detail, we block appointments 15-30 minutes apart.

What to expect during your eye examination

During our comprehensive eye exams, patients undergo a variety of tests that evaluate different aspects of their vision and ocular health. These tests include:

Refraction

Assesses the need for corrective lenses and determines the prescription for glasses or contact lenses.

Pupillary function

Evaluates the responsiveness of the pupils to light, which can indicate neurological issues or certain eye conditions.

Eye alignment

Checks for strabismus (eye misalignment) and the need for prism correction.

Peripheral vision testing

Evaluates the peripheral vision with confrontational field testing.

Stereo and color testing

Assesses depth perception and color vision, respectively.

Intraocular pressure reading

Measures the pressure within the eye, crucial for detecting glaucoma.

Slit lamp examination

Examines the anterior and posterior segments of the eye for signs of diseases such as cataracts, macular degeneration, or diabetic retinopathy.

Specialized assessments

Some comprehensive eye exams may include specialized assessments using advanced equipment such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) or Optomap imaging. These technologies provide detailed images aiding in the early detection of conditions like macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal detachments, and diabetic retinopathy.

How often should I get my eyes tested?

We generally recommend that individuals undergo comprehensive eye exams at least once every 1–2 years, depending on age, risk factors, and existing eye conditions. However, individuals with certain risk factors may need more frequent screenings.

Schedule your examination

To ensure the health and longevity of your vision, it’s important to prioritize regular comprehensive eye exams. Early detection and intervention plays an important role in preventing vision loss and preserving eye health. By scheduling your comprehensive eye exam today, you can take proactive steps towards safeguarding your vision for the future.
